College Guidance

Grade 9

Creating Awareness and Early Planning

Our program is focused on creating college awareness and emphasizing the importance of taking ownership of learning in the early years of High School.  Students understand that the work they do now will be part of their college preparation process.  In addition, we encourage students to actively pursue their interests by getting involved in activities and exploring hobbies and careers in school as well as in the larger Jordan community. 

  • Counselors will meet with students during cohorts to discuss their 4 year plan
  • Students are advised on appropriate course selection
  • Take the PSAT 8/9 and interpret scores
  • Discussions take place with the class as a whole explaining graduation requirements and keeping track of credits
  • College awareness workshops
  • Students take career and interest inventories and surveys
  • Students begin working on their resumes
Grade 10

Exploring Options and Continued Planning

Our program is focused on continuing college awareness and planning for the years ahead. Students begin to learn about different kinds of colleges and careers, discovering more about their options and their interests. 

  • Continue to focus on creating college awareness, ownership of learning and the college admission process
  • Review students' current efforts to build a portfolio
  • PSAT is administered in October
  • Students are advised on standardized testing
  • Begin course planning for junior year
  • Potentially plan a few university visits and/or summer internships and courses if possible 
  • Students continue working on their resumes
Grade 11

Focused Planning and College Preparation

Our program focuses on the college search, exploring colleges and universities that will be the best matches for the individual student based on his/her interests, goals and family considerations.  We hold confidential one-on-one meetings with students and families helping to develop college lists, explore possibilities, plan testing, select recommenders, and work on college essays. 

  • College admissions representatives (approximately 100-200 per year) visit ACS and meet with interested juniors and seniors throughout the fall and spring
  • PSAT/NMSQT is administered in October
  • Students are advised on standardized testing
  • Junior College Night for students and parents
  • Course review and planning
  • Students and parents complete college questionnaires and begin individual meetings with counselors
  • Alum/Senior Panel meeting with students about surviving the college application process
  • Practice college interviews with alumni/parents interviewers
  • Complete main college essays
  • Familiarization with college search engines and other resources to narrow down the options
  • Distribution of scholarship information throughout the year
  • Potentially plan a few university visits and/or summer internships and courses if possible 
Grade 12

Finding Your Final Matches and Applying

Our program focuses on finalizing the balanced college list that will have the best matches for the individual student based on his/her interests, goals and family considerations.  We hold confidential one-on-one meetings with students and families helping to develop college lists, explore possibilities, plan testing, and work on college applications. 

  • Individual meetings throughout the year to check in and follow up
  • College admissions representatives visit ACS
  • Senior College Night for students and parents
  • Finalizing the balanced college list
  • Celebrating successes and preparing for rejection
  • Essay workshops and individual essay/application review throughout the fall
  • University application workshops
  • Alumni panel focused on successful transition to college
