After School Activities - Winter 2018

Dear Elementary School Parents,

Our Semester Two After-School-Activities Program begins on Sunday, February 4th, 2018 and will end on Sunday, April 29th, 2018. The program duration will be 10 weeks and all activities will consist of 10 participatory classes.This inclusive program includes a variety of activities based upon student interest. Our after school activities allow children to socialize with others, to have fun and to learn new skills.

Please see the activity list below to view activity titles, dates and descriptions. Please note that After School Activities for Kindergarten students will begin this semester.  

Registration for each After School Activity begins on Thursday, January 11th 2018 at 10am. Please click the following link to register ES ASA Lottery Form. The final registration date will be Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at 3:00 P.M. when the site will close. A minimum of 8 participants is required for an activity to run. Remember that space is limited.

  • On Monday, January 22, 2018, a list of names identifying participants in each respective activity will be sent to all participants.  
  • The After School Programs payment period begins on Monday, January 22, 2018 and will end on Sunday, January 28, 2018. Payment for after school activities must be made through Paypal or through the Business Office.  
  • Your payment is your registration. Failure to pay the full amount by Sunday, January 28, 2018 at 10:00 A.M will result in a loss of spot. The spot will be filled by a student who is next up on the waiting list. Once the activities begin, no changes or refunds will be made.

Please choose your child’s after school activity with care. We want your child to have a wonderful after school experience, so please make sure that the chosen activity is one that your child shows interest.

Most activities meet once a week from 3:00 - 3:55 pm. For those parents picking up children, we ask that pick up be done promptly at 3:55 pm. Bus transportation is available for those students who regularly ride the bus.

After School Activity Registration Timeline:

  • Registration is ongoing and closes Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at 3:00 P.M.
  • Class assignments will be sent Monday, January 22, 2018
  • Payment must be made by Sunday, January 28, 2018

Please Note:

  • If your child is unable to attend his/her afterschool activity, please notify either Abeer Dajani or Donna Palmer-Dodds at adajani@acsamman.edu.jo or dpalmer-dodds@acsamman.edu.jo.
  • If your child usually rides the bus, but will not be riding due to alternate arrangements, please notify either Abeer Dajani or Donna Palmer-Dodds at adajani@acsamman.edu.jo or dpalmer-dodds@acsamman.edu.jo before 2:00PM. This is an imperative step as we want to ensure that all students arrive home in a timely fashion and that  buses are not waiting for your child.
  • In the case of an emergency, please call the Elementary School Office or Ms. Abeer Dajani at (079-943-3855).

Sunday Activities

Basketball Students will learn and develop basic basketball skills. The program will cover shooting, ball handling, passing, athleticism, defense as well as positional play.They will also get an opportunity to participate in a variety of shooting games and take part in friendly competition. 1 - 2  Gym 60JD ($85)
Fun Science Science is awesome and we are bringing this awesomeness to our ACS After School Activities Program. Students will be introduced to basic scientific concepts through simple and safe DIY science experiments. No further details will be given because we do not want to ruin any of our tricks. Yoga

Groovy Kids Yoga is a program which combines yoga, joy and movement in a fun, innovative and non-competitive way. Students will be learning the upward facing dog, mermaid, star and flower pose as well as many others. Students will also be introduced to healthy lifestyle habits to set the foundation for a fit future.

Animation Students will be introduced to the basics of coding using a language developed by MIT. Students will animate characters and create short movies as well as animate and move machines, robots and much more by pairing the coding language with robotics.

Chess

Why should I learn to play chess?

It promotes brain growth because it exercises both sides of the brain. It helps to raise your IQ. It sparks creativity, develops problem solving skills and it improves your ability to concentrate as well as  strengthens your critical thinking skills. If you are up for the brain challenge, this after school activity is for you!

Girls Basketball

Yes...just for girls! Students will learn and develop basic basketball skills. Boys Basketball Students will learn and develop basic basketball skills. Soccer Students will improve ball control, develop technical speed, strengthen passing skills, learn the importance of first touch, improve on dribbling, shooting and juggling as well as participate in fun- filled scrimmages. 1 - 2 Field 65JD ($92)
Fencing

Fencing is a multi-faceted discipline giving the fencer a workout that requires strength, cardiovascular endurance and mental skills. The focus is on basic footwork, balance, blade work, mobility and hand-eye coordination exercises. Your child will learn the fundamentals of how to fence. The activity will take place in a safe, structured and enjoyable environment.

Arts & Crafts

Crafting is so much fun especially when it is easy and taps into your creative juices. Students will have an amazing time making cool and unique crafts from a variety of mediums. It doesn’t matter how good you are at crafts, if you have patience and like to have fun while creating, this class is for you!

Peer Tutoring

Students who would like to receive additional support in specific academic areas will be tutored by carefully screened ACS High School students under the supervision of a qualified educator. This after school activity will allow for one on one focused learning.

Peace for Kids The purpose of this After School Activity is to examine the concept of peace and then to create peace through youth leadership activities, community service, developing global friendships and participating in thoughtful acts of kindness. 4 - 5 Room 311 70JD ($99)
Musical Theatre 2 Musical Theatre Club is a fun way to incorporate drama, singing, and choreography. Students will enjoy listening to music from many different shows, improving their singing voices, as well as playing drama games and working on purposeful movement for the stage. Using different songs from Broadway musicals, students will put their learning to the test to produce one or two songs for performance at the end of the semester. Ping Pong

Table tennis is also known as ping pong. Students will learn the basics of the game including the how to serve and return the ball, how to lob and perhaps master the spin. Students will learn about the proper grip, basic footwork and come to understand the effect the spin has off of the paddle. Lots of exciting games will also strengthen skills.

Crafting is so much fun especially when it is easy and taps into your creative juices. Students will have an amazing time making cool and unique crafts from a variety of mediums. Green Environmental Team An environmental club is a great way to get students energized about taking care of the Earth and helping their community while learning about some of the most important issues facing the world today. Students will work to improve the environment at ACS by working in the gardens, collecting and recycling various items and will also learn about many simple steps can protect our earth. 1 - 5 Room 211 70JD ($99)
Sewing Crafts Students will be introduced to the basics of sewing starting with learning to thread a needle. Students will then learn to sew on buttons and will progress to making simple crafts including toys and puppets. 2 - 3 Room 106 70JD ($99)
Photography Beginners photography can be done on any digital device equipped with a camera. Students will learn the simple rules for framing and composition including the Rule of Thirds and perspective. Students will also learn the common language of photography such as exposure, aperture and all about shutter speed. By the end of the program, students will create a slideshow of best works which will be shared with family and friends. 4 - 5 Room 310 80JD ($113)
Yoga for Kids Kids will improve strength, flexibility and coordination. Students will learn to focus and center themselves using breathing and visualization techniques. Students will learn, as well as practice, the value of respecting others and themselves. Students will discover mindfulness and how it can positively impact lives. Lego Club Like building things? Can you replicate a model? Do you like to problem solve, organize and plan? Join the Lego Club for some building fun. TaeKwon Do

Students will be introduced to basic stances, kicks, blocks and punches along with proper footwork and the various forms of self-defense. Students will also learn about the sport, its rules, the required discipline and fair play. Uniforms can be purchased from the instructor.

Girls on the Run

This program works to encourage girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyle choices through dynamic, interactive activities and running games. The goal is to create a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. A good pair of running shoes and a positive attitude along with a lot of girl power are all you need for this after school activity.

Painting A Painter a Day! Children will learn details about a specific famous painter, study copies/videos of the chosen painters’ creative process then focus on one particular painting. Students will then paint using the studied technique….on that day! Painters that will be studied include Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Frida Kahlo and many more! KG Room 108 70JD ($99)
Coding Students will be introduced to basic programming. They will create interactive stories, design animation texts and make mini-games in a game-like interface. Students will learn as they solve coding puzzles and will cap off the 10 weeks by building a project of their own. 4 - 5 HS Computer Lab 60JDs ($85)
Learn to Swim - Beginner Students will learn how to float and glide in ways that will help them to learn to swim as well as how to take freestyle strokes and begin side-breathing. Robotics E3 Students will begin by learning about robots and the concepts of basic movement. They will then move on to learn how to add sensors to their robots. They will continue to explore and will dig deep into the mechanics and design of various robotic pieces. Destination Imagination  Is a carefully crafted activity that inspires students to imagine, create and innovate. It is a hands on learning experience. Destination Imagination encourages students to be curious through challenge. It encourages and teaches students to collaborate and communicate with teammates in order to solve a specific problem. Students who participate will develop patience, flexibility, persistence and respect for the ideas of others as well as their own. Mind Craft Experience the game of Minecraft in an educational, collaborative and fun format. Students will work on developing Minecraft skills including designing, building, modding, electric engineering via Redstone, scratch crafting recipes and much more. 2 - 3 Room 309 60JD ($85)
