English as an Additional Language
The ACS High School English as an Additional Language (EAL) program provides direct instruction and support to increase the proficiency level of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students. In order to help LEP students successfully access the mainstream curriculum and to integrate into the school community, the EAL program provides linguistic, academic, and social enrichment.
The EAL program focuses on the development of reading, writing, listening and speaking skills based on English Language Proficiency standards that focus on content area language and social and interpersonal communication language.
High school ELL students have two to three 80 minute classes of direct instruction a week. The EAL teacher also collaborates with core content teachers and supports the students with accommodations as needed.
